Sergio Ramos admits Real Madrid’s fate is now in Barcelona’s hands

As blindingly obvious as it may be, it must still be difficult for any Real Madrid player to admit that Barcelona are sitting in pole position to claim the La Liga title.

The two Spanish clubs share one of the most intense rivalries in world football, made all the more prevalent by Barcelona’s complete dominance on both the domestic and international scene in recent years.

So strong have Luis Enrique’s men become, they are currently favourites in each of the three competitions they are still in. Winning all three would see them accomplish an unprecedented double-treble: a feat that would surely see this current line-up named as the greatest team ever.

They are already in the Copa del Rey final while retaining the Champions League seems more than possible at the moment. And on Wednesday, they took charge of the domestic league, beating Sporting Gijon 3-1 to go six points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid and seven clear of Real.

With Luis Suarez, Neymar and Leo Messi in terrific form, it seems an impossible gap to breach for both Madrid clubs. Even Real’s captain, Sergio Ramos, admits it is already Barcelona’s to lose. However, the centre-back has urged his team-mates not to give up hope just yet.

Ramos told reporters: “The title race is not over yet. There are still plenty of games ahead, but it is true that everything depends on Barcelona’s results for us. We still have hope that we can win it, though.

“We must remain focused and ensure we do not spill any more points and push Barcelona right until the very end. Atletico Madrid are obviously still ahead of us in the title race as well, so we can only wait for them to slip up.”

Out of their hands

The ten-time European champions will resume their La Liga campaign on Sunday with a trip to Malaga, but fans must surely know that the race for the title is already up. Barcelona have only dropped 12 points in their opening 24 games, meaning Real Madrid may not catch them even if they win all of their remaining games.

As a result, the focus must be on Champions League glory, which many at the Bernabeu will see as a more realistic target now. Zinedine Zidane made his managerial debut in the competition on Wednesday night and oversaw a 2-0 victory against AS Roma in the round of 16 first leg. It puts them in a commanding position going into the home tie in three weeks time. Once they get into the final eight, they can start to dream of a record 11th European title.
